The retail atmosphere in China continues to deteriorate. Citing an ongoing economic slowdown in the world’s No. 2 economy, Sephora will eliminate 3% of its workforce in China. That translates into about 120 jobs, according to parent company LVMH.

“In response to the challenging market environment and to ensure our future growth in China, Sephora China is currently streamlining our organizational structure in our head office to ensure we have the right capabilities for long-term sustainable growth,” the beauty retailer said in a statement.

Estée Lauder Cos. Expects Decline

Sephora isn’t the only beauty company facing lower sales in China. Earlier this week, The Estée Lauder Companies warned it expects further declines in prestige beauty in fiscal 2025 guidance.

During an earnings call, CFO Tracey Travis told analysts, “We are cognizant that overall global prestige beauty growth has tempered in recent months as reflected in the current declines in mainland China and Asia travel retail, particularly Hainan.”
